Major Planning Projects

Runway Improvements

The airport completed a 1,000-foot extension of the runway on November 2, 2011. The longer runway allows existing flights to accommodate more passengers and will result in greater efficiency and passenger convenience. The extension does NOT allow larger jets to fly into/out of the airport. Pitkin County regulations prohibit larger aircraft due to airfield constraints. County Commissioners reaffirmed wingspan and gross weight restrictions in 2005.The Federal Aviation Administration covered approximately 82 percent of the $15.4 million cost.

Master Plan Update

The Airport’s Master Plan is a 20-year facility improvement guide that presents a comprehensive overview of the airport’s needs, including the timing and cost for proposed improvements, an analysis of financing options and a clear implementation plan. It includes information on the terminal building, parking, roadways, rental car facilities, aircraft storage areas, and general aviation. These updates will result in a refinement of the County’s long-range vision for the airport. Community input is an integral part of developing this plan. Sustainability Program

Aspen/Pitkin County Airport is dedicated to increasing sustainability at the airport. The Airport is in the process of creating an Evolving Sustainability Program that will focus on the primary goals of economic viability, operational efficiency, natural resource conservation and social responsibility. The program will include long and short term goals and metrics to measure the success of these goals as they are implemented. The program will also include a sustainable construction management plan to develop sustainable practices for projects at the Airport.
